NEW YORK — The roving days are over for NASA’s Spirit Mars rover after more than six years of rolling across the martian surface, the space agency announced Jan. 26. NASA engineers have decided to abandon efforts to rescue the Spirit rover from the deep martian sand that snared it in May 2009. Instead, they are trying to prepare the rover to survive the harsh winter ahead in Mars’ southern hemisphere.

Brightwheel, a startup that provides technology to preschools, said it’s valued at more than $600 million after a $55 million funding round. The investment in the San Francisco-based company was led by Lee Fixel’s venture capital firm Addition. Laurene Powell Jobs’s Emerson Collective and Jeff Weiner’s Next Play Ventures also participated in the round. Three young children who police found unresponsive early Monday on the beach at New York's Coney Island all died by drowning, the city's Office of Chief Medical Examiner said Tuesday. The manner of each of their deaths was ruled a homicide, the office determined. Police detained the children's mother, who is suspected of drowning them, authorities said. The medical examiner's findings will advance the investigation and help determine whether the mother, who remains hospitalized for evaluation, should be charged, officials said.
